Carla Van Der Poel
BPsych, MPsychTH
I hold a bachelor’s degree in psychological science from the University of New England and a Master’s in Psychotherapy from the Australian College of Applied Psychology. Additionally, I have completed Levels 1 and 2 Gottman Method training, equipping me with evidence-based tools to support individuals and couples in building stronger, healthier relationships.
I am deeply passionate about working with both individuals and couples to help them break free from patterns keeping them stuck. Using a systems lens and psychodynamic approach, I focus on fostering relational self-awareness and helping clients create meaningful, long-lasting change. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and tailored to each client’s unique journey toward growth and healing.

A calm, private space — wherever you are
Whether we meet in person or online, every session is designed around you. In-office sessions offer a calm, quiet setting away from the busyness of everyday life; online sessions offer that same care and confidentiality from wherever feels comfortable.
Therapy works best when you feel safe enough to say the things you don't say anywhere else. Every session is confidential, unrushed, and shaped around you — what you're carrying, what you're working towards, and the pace that's right for you.
Where to find me
My office sits in Rose Bay, in the heart of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs — close to Bondi Junction, Double Bay, and Vaucluse. If getting here isn't practical, we can just as easily meet online.
FAQ

Counselling usually focuses on helping you manage specific issues or life events in the short term, offering guidance and practical strategies. Psychotherapy often goes deeper, exploring long-standing patterns, emotions, and behaviours to support lasting personal growth and change. Both approaches can be helpful, and the right fit depends on your needs.
-
The number of sessions varies for each person. Some people benefit from just a few sessions, while others may choose ongoing support. We’ll discuss your goals together and review your progress regularly

No, you do not need a referral to book an appointment. You can contact me directly and begin therapy at any time. Referrals are only required if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate, which is not available for sessions with counsellors or psychotherapists
-
Counselling and psychotherapy sessions are not yet covered by Medicare rebates. However, the overall cost is often similar to what you would pay out of pocket for a psychologist after the rebate. This means you can access support directly, without needing a referral or paperwork, and with more flexibility around the number and frequency of sessions. If you have private health insurance, you may be able to claim a rebate depending on your policy.
